Floods hit Turkey, killing five people in the center of the country.

The floods that have hit central Turkey since Saturday, in particular Ankara, the capital, have killed five people, according to a new report released Monday by the Turkish authorities.

The body of a person missing for two days was found in Ankara on Monday afternoon, announced Afad, Turkey’s public disaster management body. Particularly affected, the province of Ankara has four victims. The floods also killed one in Karaman (center), according to the local press.

Very heavy rains, reaching up to “30 liters per m²”, according to Afad and hailstorms in places, hit the center of the country on Saturday and Sunday and caused damage in several towns in the north and center of Turkey. Eight villages were still inaccessible on Monday morning in Kastamonu (north) due to flooding which caused the collapse of roads.

The television channels broadcast cataclysmic images of streets drowned in tumultuous waves, washing away cars and livestock, roads washed away and roofs torn off by the storm. Yellow and orange alerts were issued for 42 towns in central and northern Turkey on Monday. Elementary schools and high schools were closed on Monday in Ankara and Gemerek (center).
